77 In the period under study, however, the Ottoman Empire stretched from Algiers to Baghdad, and from Mecca to the walls of Vienna. Descended from a minor fourteenthcentury Anatolian estate, the Ottomans established their empire in the place of the decaying Byzantine Empire. After conquering Constantinople in 1453, they expanded their empire for the next two hundred years.
