Example text

77 In the period under study, however, the Ottoman Empire stretched from Algiers to Baghdad, and from Mecca to the walls of Vienna. Descended from a minor fourteenthcentury Anatolian estate, the Ottomans established their empire in the place of the decaying Byzantine Empire. After conquering Constantinople in 1453, they expanded their empire for the next two hundred years. Ottoman armies carried the banner of Islam across Egypt and the Maghreb, east to Mecca, Medina, and the Caspian Sea, and across Greece and the Balkans as far as Budapest in Europe.

In their appeal to Elizabethan interests in love, kingship, war, and ambition they were conventional enough, but in their extravagant hyperbole, panoramic imagery, and titanic characterization, the Tamburlaine plays provided something new. These were plays designed to awe, inspire, and horrify as they swept audiences across an exotic and seemingly infinite space. These were characters that did not merely speak. Instead, they delivered exhortations, amplified by a cascade of imagery promising conquest and violence without end.

Introduction: before orientalism, after orientalism 41 In the field of early modern studies, we have only begun to recognize the power and validity of Ottoman claims to what is often considered the Western tradition. Thus, as I examine two accounts of the 1453 siege and sack of Constantinople—the first, Ottoman, written around 1590, the second, English, and published about a decade later in 1603—my goal is not to indicate where one version is more accurate than another. That is, I will not attempt to adjudicate between Western accounts emphasizing the indiscriminate slaughter of innocents in the streets of Constantinople, and Ottoman accounts highlighting the Sultan’s entry as an ablutionary restoration of order.
