Adornoʼs aversions to the United States come out more clearly in this section. Claussen discusses Adornoʼs stubborn resistance to jazz, explaining and criticizing it in terms of a compensation for his own thwarted musical ambitions and an excessive desire for continuity and identity in his damaged life in exile. On the other hand, Claussen also criticizes those who cite Adornoʼs overwrought critique of jazz as a convenient excuse to dismiss his critical social theory as a whole. Claussen 30 points out, correctly, that Adornoʼs critique – however ones judges it – viewed jazz merely as a symptom of much deeper social-psychological phenomena, and this is what Adorno demanded be taken seriously, not just the musical merits of jazz from a purely aesthetic standpoint.
