Once I had reached the minimum standard, the sergeant stopped me and sent me to the back of the line to prepare for the run. After the run—I took it easy to conserve my energy, ran with a friend, and came in at 13:30 for two miles—we did six pull-ups and were told to line up in formation to wait for the rest of the class to finish. Once the physical fitness test was complete, we got onto the back of trucks bound for the pool, where we would 27 Andrew Exum undergo a combat water survival test. The instructors were looking to weed out weak candidates, spraying us with water hoses while we were on the side of the pool, urging us to quit, and looking for the slightest weakness or sign of panic in our swimming.

That’s the Ranger ethos, and it begins in Ranger School. The beginning of the second week marked the beginning of the patrolling portion of the course, where we were taught to fight and conduct Ranger type missions (ambushes and raids) in the woods.
