There really should be no contradiction in all this. One set of values is needed to support the other. I suppose we would all agree that the most basic and conservative of our ideals lies in our respect for human life and the dignity and integrity of the individual. But to protect those conservative values we must rely on the application of the liberal concepts of free speech, worship, and assembly as provided in the Bill of Rights.
