Is sociology most sensible understood as easily chipping away at our lack of know-how approximately society, or does it have broader roles and tasks? if that is so, to what―or maybe to whom―are those tasks? fitting humanity as its epistemological and normative begin and endpoint, this booklet indicates how humanism recasts sociology as an job that doesn't purely do issues, or effect issues, yet can also be self-consciously for something.
Rather than resurrecting frustrating classical conceptions of humanism, the ebook in its place constructs its arguments on pragmatic grounds, exhibiting how a practical humanism provides a better photograph of either the character and cost of the self-discipline. This photo relies much less round the declare that sociology is able to supplying authoritative revelations approximately society, and extra upon its skill to provide representations of the social in epistemologically open, transformative, ethical, and hopeful ways.
Ultimately, it argues that sociology's actual worth can in basic terms be disclosed by way of changing its picture as a self-discipline aimed in the direction of disinterested social enlightenment with considered one of itself as a convention either established upon, and at its most sensible self-consciously aimed in the direction of, human ends and imperatives. it is going to attract students and scholars around the social sciences, and to these operating in social conception, sociology, and philosophy of the social sciences specifically.

Though himself also religious, albeit unconventionally so, Jean-Jacques Rousseau was central to this philosophical development, and against the prior theistic doctrine of original sin, presented what was at the time a dangerously subversive argument for the original amorality or even goodness of human nature, which only later became corrupted by exposure to the debasing effects of ‘civil society’ (Rousseau, 2009).

In their shared rejection of absolutes), this book is concerned far more with the latter philosophical signification. However, even when focussing upon this Continental meaning, tracking the various usages of the term reveals a set of apparent tangles and internal contradictions, including not least the fact that certain figures considered antihumanist from one perspective might just as easily be taken as humanist from another. Foucault, for example, is often presented as a figurehead of poststructuralist antihumanism, but both in his engaged political activities and even in his theoretical orientation, he can also be shown to have retained a latent unacknowledged commitment to humanist ideals (Gutting, 2005: 240).
