The settlement is believed to have been re-occupied by Romano-Britons after the Romans withdrew and their forts were abandoned. Most remarkable are the cup-and-ring marks carved into the rock. They are Stone Age, long before the fort, and take the form of a hollowed indentation, surrounded by concentric rings.
