After the production of the Oresteia in 458 he again visited Sicily; he died there, at Gela, in 456/5; his epitaph commemorated him, not as a poet, but as one who had fought at Marathon. At some date during the next thirty years a state decree permitted anyone who so wished to restage Aeschylus’ plays at the dramatic festivals in competition with those of living dramatists. Two of Aeschylus’ sons, Euphorion and Euaeon, themselves became tragic dramatists; so did a nephew, Philocles, who was the founder of a dynasty of tragic poets that spanned four generations and lasted until 340 or later.

Prometheus Bound Prometheus is chained to a rock in the far north, by the order of Zeus, for having stolen fire and given it to mortals. He reveals that he possesses a secret vital to Zeus: Zeus will be overthrown if he mates with a certain female who is destined to have a son mightier than his father. He defiantly refuses to disclose this female’s identity, and finally is swallowed up by the earth. ] Since 1856 (though never in antiquity) the authenticity of the Prometheus plays has been increasingly doubted: sometimes because Prometheus Bound portrays Zeus as an evil tyrant; sometimes because the intellectual concerns of the play seem closer to those of the 430s than to those of Aeschylus’ lifetime; sometimes (most cogently) because the language, metre, style and technique of the play (and, so far as we can judge, also of Prometheus Unbound ) are in certain respects clearly divergent from those of Aeschylus.

Creon changes his mind too late, and Antigone, Haemon and Creon’s wife Eurydice all commit suicide. Ajax (probably 440s or 430s) Ajax, defeated by Odysseus in the contest for the armour of Achilles, has tried to take revenge for the slight, but has been driven mad by Athena and has tortured and killed some cattle and sheep. Returning to his senses and conscious of his deep disgrace, he commits suicide.
