Nevertheless, they point to significant economic and financial benefits to communities, and the need for specific measures to safeguard the interests of those who may lose as a result of unequal distribution of the benefits.

Participatory appraisal techniques were used to build up an understanding of forest use and dependency, to identify sub-groups within the community and to select forest areas for a resource survey in order to estimate forest status and productivity. Apart from the main study villages, data was also collected in nearby villages. A wide range of sources at different points along the marketing chain, including villagers, official sources and traders, provided marketing information and price data. Presentation of Results This report presents the analytical method developed for the study, the application of the method to villages in two forest systems, and a discussion of the results of the analyses.
