Frank Jackson champions the reason for conceptual research as crucial to philosophical inquiry. in recent times conceptual research has been undervalued and greatly misunderstood, indicates Jackson. He argues that such research is mistakenly clouded in secret, combating a complete diversity of vital questions from being productively addressed. He anchors his argument in discussions of particular philosophical concerns, beginning with the metaphysical doctrine of physicalism and relocating on, through loose will, which means, own id, movement, and alter, to ethics and the philosophy of colour. during this approach the ebook not just deals a methodological application for philosophy, but in addition casts new gentle on a few much-debated difficulties and their interrelations.

Example text

To avoid misunderstanding, I should enter an explanation, and make two disclaimers at this stage. The explanation concerns my use of the word ‘concept’. Our subject is really the elucidation of the possible situations covered by the words we use to ask our questions—concerning free action, knowledge, and the relation between the physical and the psychological, or whatever. I use the word ‘concept’ partly in deference to the traditional terminology which talks of conceptual analysis, and partly to emphasize that though our subject is the elucidation of the various situations covered by bits of language according to one or another language user, or by the folk in general, it is divorced from considerations local to any particular language.

But they will not get very far if they fail to attend to the representational properties of the handbill on the wanted person. These properties give them their target, or, if you like, define the subject of their search. Likewise, metaphysicians will not get very far with questions like: Are there Ks? Are Ks nothing over and above Js? g. Paul Churchland, ‘Eliminative Materialism and the Propositional Attitudes’, Journal of Philosophy, 78 (1981): 67–90, and Daniel C. , 1991), ‘Appendix A (For Philosophers)’.

In these cases it is, it seems to me, misguided to accuse them of error (unless they go on to say that their concept of knowledge is ours), though they are, of course, missing out on an interesting way of grouping together cases—the way we effect with the term ‘knowledge’—that cuts across the grouping effected in terms of true justified belief, and which has its own distinctive role to play in epistemology. Extracting a person's theory of what counts as a K from intuitions about how to describe possible cases, and taking it to reveal their concept of K-hood, is not a peculiarly philosophical business.
