After a few years my mother broke down. They did love each other, and my father said he had settled down and gotten a good job and they’d live nicely. Also, once again, my poor health contributed to a move. I’d managed to come down with malaria, which was almost epidemic in coastal regions of Italy in the early 1920s. The doctors told my mother that the moist climate wasn’t good for me and I should be taken somewhere else. Connecticut seemed a good bet. In 1923, we came back on a ship called the Dante Alighieri, which was named after the famed Italian poet, of course.

And you can throw in an Academy Award! But I know him on a different level. A pal you can hang out with, play golf, go eat with, whatever. A best friend! A man who is passionate about life and is interested in just about everything you can think of and more than likely knows a lot about it. And when it comes to acting, well, you can forget that, he is the best. He has done me a lot of favors and the most precious one is his friendship. He has sent me strange gifts and I in return to him. I have been trying to outgift him forever, but it is great to have a buddy that kinda thinks like you do.

Shortly after the accident Mom came down with tuberculosis. She went to a Dr. Pakosta, a chiropractor, who was the only medical man we know. He actually kept her alive for a long, long time. But she was getting worse. She finally went to a doctor at New Haven hospital, a Dr. Posa. He told her she should pack up and go to somewhere warm like New Mexico or Arizona. Of course, she wouldn’t leave her family. She continued to work as hard as ever, on her garden, keeping the house white-glove clean, making sure her children were well cared for.
