The resulting spin-Peierls state can be regarded as an alternation of the strength of the AF correlations along the chain. Besides the importance of elucidating how the dimerization o and the average bond-length R depend on the strength of the Coulomb interactions, the dimerization of polyacetylene is a very interesting problern from a purcly methodological point of view. On the one band, a few exact results are available to compare with: (i) the Bethe-Ansatz solution for infinite Hubbard chains and arbitrary values of U ft, 2 (ii) the noncorrelated Iimit (U = 0) for any value of oand R, and (iii) finite-duster Lanczos calculations in the strongly correlated Iimit (Heisenberg model) including extrapolations to infinite chains.

This is the simplest model to investigate the possibility of coexistence of a SDW, which may result from the U term, and a CDW, produced by the I term. The possibility of a dimerization of the hopping term due to the coupling to a bond deformation is also taken into account.
