The scope of the changes involved ranged from the creation of a unified, rational legal system (which meant, among other things, the universal adoption of family names); the introduction of a land registry that literally mapped the Netherlands for the first time; and the establishment of a transporta- 38 Colonial Incorporation tion network of roads, canals, and railways (Woud 1987). The pace of these changes was, however, noticeably slower in the Netherlands than elsewhere. As natural resources and cheap labour were lacking, the pace of industrialization was slow; the Dutch economy remained dominated by agriculture well into the late nineteenth century.

There I was given contact information for the chair of the synod of the Christian Church of Central Sulawesi (Gereja Kristen Sulawesi Tengah [GKST]), the Reverend A. Lumentut.
