Unequal Structures, Unequal Outcomes Ten years ago Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis touched off a lively debate reagarding the role of schools in the reproduction of the class structure. 1 They attempted to show that education is a crucial element in the reproduction of a division of labor favorable to the maintenance of capitalism. Schools, they argued, reproduce the social relationships necessary to the security of capitalist profits, and the stability of the capitalist division of labor.

There are more liberal, somewhat more socially rooted, positions.
Unlike their more conservative colleagues, liberal scholars have sought to avoid "innateness" and biological characteristics pure and simple as the bases for making causal inferences about socially disadvantaged groups, and point instead toward patterns in the social environment and culture to explain social and economic inequalities and differences. Just before and just after the Second World War, the social psychological writings of Thomas, Myrdal, Adorno, and Allport set the liberal tone for the theorization and empirical investigation of factors underlying social inequality in American society.
