A fourth strand of research therefore focuses on the study of diversity within the NGO community, as a way to explore causes of variety in NGO behavior and performance. These topics are approached from various perspectives and disciplines: we find sociological and economic publications on the role and position of NGOs in society, as well as organizational studies about a specific NGO or the NGO community as a whole (see, for example, Hansmann, 1987, Douglas 1987, DiMaggio & Anheier, 1990, Seibel & Anheier, 1990).

Nation states and international organizations were responsible for increased NGO funding. The disappointment in the effectiveness of state interventions led to political decisions to subsidize NGOs as a substitution of or complementary to state action (Edwards & Hulme, 1996). The increased funding of western NGOs by western governments allowed these NGOs in turn to fund local NGOs in the developing world and in Eastern Europe.
