The forebears he referred to were ‘‘Edward Wilmot Blyden, Alexander Crummell, W. E. B. 16 Racist essentialism had it that these alleged innate traits of the black race or black people were absolutely fixed and unchanging. What Blyden, Crummell, Du Bois, and other black intellectuals did was to take some of the second kind of racist essentialist traits, the ‘‘positive’’ ones, and make them part of racial essentialism, without necessarily seeing them as innate or permanent, and even accepting that history, culture, and social experience had something to do with this investment, such as making black people more open and caring.

He shied totally away from an Africancentric Perspective and Africancentric knowledge and probably would have shied away from what I call a Blackcentric Perspective and Blackcentric knowledge, which I will talk about later in this chapter. West did not want Black intellectuals to be deferential to the White thought or white intellectuals he wanted them to follow, and he even pointed out to them what he regarded as being of value in the recommendations that he made and they should work with. One of his recommendations was bourgeois humanistic thought and action, from which Black intellectuals should take ‘‘the emphasis on human will and heroic effort .

Indeed, it is presently fashionable for black intellectuals, of various kinds, to ridicule the Black middle class and Black middle-class leadership. And the irony and contradiction of it all is that it is mainly intellectuals from the Black middle class doing the ridiculing and undermining of their own class and its leadership role and abilities. The second violation of the American Negro Academy’s code for Black intellectuals was that many Black intellectuals abetted White racism, namely, white supremacy/ebonicism, rather than attacking it.
