Here a distinction is made between “the entire sensibility,” in relation to original apperception, and all possible appearances within that sensibility. , in the form of the inner intuition of myself. […] [This] really says no more than that in the whole time in which I am conscious of myself, I am conscious of this time as belonging to the unity of my Self, and it is all the same whether I say that this whole time is in Me, as an individual unity, or that I am to be found with numerical identity, in all of this time” (A 362).
Aquila in that field that is at least the target of the intellectual action needed for strictly objective determinations. This must in turn, just of itself, impose at least a kind of “objective,” or proto-objective, order upon that field: in any case not merely a fact about one’s own inner state. Or to put it in the terms that Kant himself employs, it must at least guarantee that appearances themselves “fit into a connection of human cognitions” (A 121), even if not yet on the fullest level of objectivity.
Here, in any case I call attention to Kant’s repeated references to some sort of manifold, not in consciousness explicitly, but in “an,”²⁴ or “a certain,”²⁵ or “a given”²⁶ Anschauung. And it is just here that we need to ask whether Kant does not in fact mean by “an” Anschauung a state of a perceiver that has as its “object” (or proto-object) at most a general field for possible objects for that perceiver (and perhaps, correlatively, that field itself). Consider the first sentence of the B-Deduction: “The manifold of representations can be given in an Anschauung that is merely sensible” (B 129).
