Conversely, low-key images are not simply dark and underexposed. Both types of image have a full tonal range that will include all tones from solid black through to near paper white. Using a reflected light meter such as the one in your camera to set the exposure for either high-key or low-key images will result in under- or overexposure respectively. The light meter will always suggest an exposure that will produce an average mid-grey tone (see pages 94–97 for more information). It is important therefore to use a light meter that measures the light falling on the subject – if one is available – rather than a meter that measures the reflected light from either the predominantly light or dark tones in the high- and low-key setups.

Where these shutters are employed in modern SLR cameras, either film or digital, they more often use electromechanically controlled metal foils. These shutters can nowadays achieve fantastically short exposures, many SLRs having 1/4000 or 1/8000 as a fastest shutter speed.
