Hitherto, national conventions as to what constituted (for example) the working class have tended to vary, as indeed has the class placement of borderline groups such as supervisors.

Nevertheless, it might still be thought that, given this problem, we should at the outset have explored the relationship between social class and social justice in terms of an alternative system of classification—specifically one which was explicitly hierarchical. This is certainly possible in principle. Indeed, it is precisely what is attempted by those working in the so-called status attainment tradition, who analyse mobility between occupations ranked along a (p. 30 ) unidimensional scale of socio-economic status or prestige: and who, by incorporating strong assumptions about the precise positions of different occupations on that scale, are able to employ powerful regression techniques to investigate the possible determinants of individual success 8 or failure.
