Following Durkheim, most sociologists have been persuaded that social reality exists independently of individuals and language. Indeed, Durkheim was convinced of the existence of properties of a supra-personal reality ascendant over the units who compose it and not reducible to them.

But when you talk about agents I would also like to introduce the concept of social relations. Social relations can be understood structurally. Social structures can also be understood relationally, though not necessarily in human individualistic terms. I think it is slightly confusing in terms of this debate to say that social agents are also structures; although, of course, social agents are structured. They are stratified beings in terms of the ontology of realism; but there is a distinction between structure and agency at any moment of time.

I think it is free action that Rom and Charlie are wanting to conceptually rescue. I think it is freedom that human beings implicitly desire in their action. I think the real difference is this: that Rom thinks that because revolutions have failed to produce a better society, because they have sometimes involved bloodshed, that there is nothing really we can do except to try and be good people within the context of existing structures. So let's just deny that there are existing structures so that we can be as good as we want to be.
