Backbone Organization Healthy Kids Director

Position Overview

 

To lead this important work, United Way of El Paso County is seeking a passionate and entrepreneurial Director.  The Director will be a visionary, dynamic leader who can grow and lead the Backbone efforts, facilitate the collective success of this regional effort, and serve as a public ambassador for the Priority Area. More specifically, the Director will also drive the Healthy Kids’ internal and external functions, including policy analysis, policy advocacy, data management, capacity building, communication, convening, and organizing.

 

Major Duties & Responsibilities

 

The Healthy Kids Director will manage staff and systems and be accountable for nurturing the efficiency and effectiveness of both, providing high-level strategic thinking and facilitation of activities in the Healthy Kids Priority Area. Key responsibilities include:

Leadership:

 

-        Provide vision, adaptive leadership, modeling United Way El Paso County values at all times and fostering a culture that reflects them;

 

-        Developing, coaching and mentoring other staff members; and

 

-        Establish, facilitate, and execute effective and open communication with the Paso del Norte Health Foundation and with other stakeholders, particularly related to internal decisions and strategy.

 

Policy Development:

 

-        Identify and contract with vendor for policy expertise;

 

-        Oversee development of policy briefs;

 

-        In concert with relevant stakeholders, develop and present policy agenda;

 

-        Develop advocacy priorities;

 

-        Develop strategies; and

 

-        Implement policy agenda including achievable goal, strategies, and assessment of effectiveness.

Data Management:

 

-        Oversee the data collection and data management of an on-line out-of-school time and school health library.

 

-        Oversee timely updating of Google Out-of-School Time maps.

Capacity Building:

 

-        In collaboration with PdNHF staff, develop training content.

 

-        Oversee implementation of trainings on topics to support and strengthen out-of-school time programs in the region.

 

o   Maintain and manage contract with provider(s).

 

-        Oversee technical assistance for grantees and other community partners

 

o   Provide technical assistance as needed

 

-        Provide support of Healthy Kids Priority Area grantees by oversight of

 

o   grantee site visits,

 

o   grantee sharing sessions, and

 

o   grantee orientations.

 

-        Collaborate with PdNHF staff on development of quality assessment tool for OST (out-of-school time) programs.

 

-        Participate in ongoing meetings with Paso del Norte Health Foundation staff.

Communications:

 

-        Oversee development and implementation of comprehensive, bilingual communication plan;

 

-        Work collaboratively with other staff to develop and manage dynamic content for social media;

 

-        Communicate the objectives of Healthy Kids Priority Area to the community and potential partners, including sharing the Common Agenda or other collateral materials;

 

-        Facilitate communication between Healthy Kids Priority Area partners and other stakeholders by hosting regular conference calls, in-person meetings, or coordinating regular email updates.

 

-        Work collaboratively with other staff to create or manage creation of yearly summary reports of Healthy Kids Priority Area progress; and

 

-        Work collaboratively with other staff to develop communications materials as Healthy Kids Priority Area evolves, potentially including summary documents, brochures, FAQs, and other items.

 

-        Approve materials, including press releases and background memos; and

 

-        Oversee assessment of the effectiveness of the communication plan.

 

 Convener:

 

-        Facilitate stakeholders’ collaboration efforts to affect positive youth development and increase and sustain in and out-of-school time activities;

 

-        identify opportunities to align existing strategies amongst various community stakeholders to collaboratively support, promote, and enhance positive youth development; and

 

-        Develop common agenda framework.

 

-        Work with Borderland Out-of-School Time (BOOST) Network Steering Committee and/or work groups to identify appropriate meaningful learning opportunities.

 

-        Build the Backbone’s identity as a respected, neutral convener among a broad spectrum of local stakeholders; and

 

-        Cultivate excellent working relationships with senior education and community leaders.

 

REQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS

 

This is an outstanding opportunity to play a critical role in working with families, community organizations, and schools to increase protective factors for youth.   Therefore, first and foremost, the Director must be committed to the mission and overarching goals of Healthy Kids Priority Area.

 

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

·        At least a Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, public health, psychology or a related field.  Master’s degree preferred. Candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to reflective supervision, data collection, and continuous quality improvement.

 

·        At least 7-10 years of relevant work experience, including at least five (5) years managing teams in a fast-paced and high-growth nonprofit, social enterprise, or business start-up environment.

 

·        Experience working with Out-of-School Time Program(s) and/or in Public Education.

 

·        Demonstrated success in cultivating fund development relationships.

 

·        Experience with complex project management and stakeholder management.

 

·        Existing relationships with, or ability to build relationships with, a cross-sectoral range of stakeholders in the local or regional area, including senior executives.

      ·        Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast paced and sometimes quickly changing environment.

 

·        Advance strategy and planning skills, including an ability to think strategically on both organizational and systemic levels over multi-year horizons.

·        Strong facilitation and presentation skills for multiple types of audiences.

 

·        Strong data acumen and ability to oversee complex shared-measurement systems.

 

·        Strong analytical and problem solving skills self-starter.

 

      ·        Executive presence to inspire confidence and passion in both internal and external audiences.

 

·        Extensive computer literacy with proficiency in Excel and other MS Office applications is required.

 

·        Research and analytical skills.

·        Ability to maintain the confidentiality of job related and proprietary information.

 

·        Bi-lingual in Spanish.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

 

·        Must be able to work a flexible schedule with the possibility of early morning, evening, and weekend work.

 

·        Valid Texas or New Mexico driver’s license, insurance and vehicle required.

 

·        For travel to Juarez, Mexico, candidate must have valid passport and/or border crossing card.
