Good Samaritan Community Services is a catalyst for change, supporting individuals and families by providing excellent community services to overcome the impact of poverty.  These services include a child development program, afterschool and summer youth enrichment programs, a college readiness program, family services, and the only nationally accredited senior center in south Texas.  What began as a ministry of the Episcopal Church on the west side of San Antonio in 1951 now reaches 5,500 individuals and families across South Texas.

Job Purpose

The Director of Finance enables and advances the mission, programs and operations of the organization by providing financial reports and analysis utilizing financial accounting practices that are consistent with current trends and best practices. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, your primary role is to serve as a catalyst for change, supporting staff, board members, clients and the community to be a place of excellent community services to overcome the impact of economic poverty.  As a member of the SLT you demonstrate the agency values of respect for others, acting with integrity, showing work commitment, developing oneself and others and practicing stewardship over financial resources. The person in this position must also be able to function as a team player who is able to listen to peers and colleagues and can engage in constructive feedback in a discussion of agency objectives.  Finally, the person that fills this position must understand Good Samaritan's mission and our role in working with our clients to understand their needs and how we can serve them better.



  1. Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s fiscal functions and performance within GAAP standards.

  2. Assists the Advancement Department in preparing all financial documentation for grant proposals and grant award reporting requirements.

  3. Prepare OR oversee preparation of monthly cost reimbursement contracts with government agencies.

  4. Participate in the development of GSCS plans and programs as a strategic partner.

  5. Evaluate and advise on the impact of long range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory actions.

  6. Prepares annual program and administrative budgets.  Provides timely and accurate ongoing analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the CEO, the Board and other SLT members in performing their duties.

  7. Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce fiscal policies and procedures of GSCS by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of GSCS.

  8. Establish credibility throughout the organization and with the Board as an effective developer of solutions to financial challenges.

  9. Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to SLT Members and others with respect to financial operations of GSCS. Continuously improve and refine the budgeting process through training of department directors and managers on financial issues impacting department budgets and programs.

  10. Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the organization.

  11. Monitors and controls the flow of cash receipts and disbursements.  Examines, analyzes, and seeks new ways to improve efficiency in handling account receivables.

  12. Maintain a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes a minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.

  13. Be an advisor from the financial perspective on any contracts into which GSCS may enter.

  14. Evaluate the finance and business operations structure for continuous improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as provide individuals within the department professional and personal growth opportunities.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for the direct supervision of the Accounting Clerk.


Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.


Physical Demands:

This is largely a sedentary role; however some movement of documents is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open cabinets and bend and stand as necessary.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Additional time may be necessary (evening and weekend work) as job duties demand.


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Accounting and Finance, CPA desirable.

  • 3 – 5 years experience in accounting and preparing PBC checklists and working with outside auditors.   

  • Experience with fund accounting and working with local, state and federal funding sources and contracts.

  • Knowledge of grant program budgeting and accounting.   

  • Experience with using Intacct is desirable, although not required.


Rate of Pay:

Salary dependent on experience
