John M. O'Quinn Gallery Opening night performance featuring: Daniel Adame, Shanon Adams, Tina Shariffskul and Prudence Sun  Intrigued by the potential found in the everyday and the unspectacular, Post and Nolan collaborate on a site-specific installation that looks toward the Lawndale Art Center itself for inspiration. Activities that relate to the everyday operations of the art space form a framework for choreographed scenarios and objects in this collaborative time-based installation.
Time and space for art: with an emphasis on studio activity rather than product, the post-minimalist work of the 70's is an art historical touchstone for both artists. Post-minimalism's focus on action and the vernacular is echoed in their ongoing practice. Parallels may be drawn between the present moment and that of the economic downturn of the 1970's. Just as then, it is a good time for art. In the media installations of Linda Post, a choreography of the everyday emerges as simple actions are performed and systematized. Jim Nolan's off-hand and irreverent work combines the aesthetics of working class labor and underground music culture with the language of Minimalism. This project is their first major collaboration. Cecily E. Horton Gallery  Artists often utilize self-portraiture to experiment with fresh ideas and new techniques, and to explore personal inner narratives through visual symbolism. All of the artists in the exhibition chose to create new work for this show or are presenting new excerpts from bodies of work they are currently producing. The group exhibition highlights 16 emerging artists from Colorado, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Texas and Mexico. With The Photographic Mirror, artist Chuy Benitez curates a sampling of 21st century photographic self-portraiture. |
You, Me & Diane | Emily Peacock
Grace R. Cavnar Gallery  You, Me & Diane is a series of photographs by Emily Peacock based on work from the seminal book Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph. Peacock has "recreated" Arbus' influential images using herself and her own family as the subject matter. Like Arbus, Peacock is attracted to strangeness, and the poignancy of our shared human condition. But, whereas Arbus sought out the strange in many different scenarios, Peacock always creates her photographs from within the familiar, people and places she knows intimately. Most importantly, You, Me & Diane embodies Peacock's innate sense of humor as she takes on the absurd task of recreating an already remarkable image. |

Project Space  Randall McCabe's drawing stems from series of repetitive mark making exercises using as his source a recurring paradigm found among the drawings of small children. He began by filling up sheets of paper, but not long into the process conceived of a long single sheet of paper, without end, on which he would continue the repetition and, over time, have a record of whatever changes might occur. In 2005, McCabe built two spools and began what has, for over six years, been a chronicle and notebook of those first drawings and of his own thoughts since. Measuring over 100' long, the work is one continuous image, rather than a sequence of separate and discrete drawings, made using a nib pen and India ink. This scroll was conceived as an ongoing study and is, still, a work in progress. It is shown now, publicly, for the first time and in its current state. The imagery has changed over the years but has remained, as best as McCabe has been able to manage, a single drawing. |

Digital Pariah is a feature-length documentary by 2011-2012 Lawndale Artist Studio Program participant David Politzer about Terrance Cummings, a 34 year-old African American man living with Asperger's Syndrome. Terrance is unemployed and stuck in Youngstown, OH during an economic recession. The video follows him as he (occasionally) looks for work, but mostly plays video games and muses about his life.
Bayou City Art Festival

ESIGN FAIR 2012 April 25-29, 2012  Design Fair 2012 features vintage modern objects of the 20th century as well examples of cutting-edge contemporary design. A wide selection of carefully curated items will be available for purchase as part of the Design Fair, including furniture, glass, ceramics, lighting, books, metalwork and fashion. Visitors to the Fair will be able to meet the designers and exhibitors for an up-close and personal look at the pace-setting designs of today and the mid-20th century. The Texas Co-Op, a special section of the Fair, features individual Texas-based designers. 2012 Curator, Garrett Hunter invited individual designers to offer specific products. These new and emerging product lines currently are in small-scale production and represent innovations in industrial and object design today. Lawndale Art Center Call for Exhibition Proposals Deadline: March 15, 2012
Lawndale Art Center accepts proposals from artists and curators throughout the year to be reviewed twice annually by Lawndale's Programming Committee. Lawndale is currently seeking proposals for exhibitions to be scheduled between November 2012 through May 2013.
Houston Arts Alliance - Alliance Gallery Call for Proposals Deadline: March 19, 2012
The Alliance Gallery is seeking proposals for exhibitions to take place from 2012 - 2013 that uniquely showcase Houston's identity. Preference will be given to artists who address themes that form and inform Houston's culture including technology, science, community, energy, culture and design innovation. Individual artists are accepted but group shows and collaborations are encouraged.

Empty Bowls Houston: Call for Bowls  The Empty Bowls Steering Committee invites artists to donate handmade bowls for Empty Bowls Houston 2012, which will be held Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Proceeds from the sale of donated bowls benefit The Houston Food Bank. Bowls may be dropped off beginning the first week of May at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, 4848 Main Street (Tuesday through Sunday), or the Ceramic Store, 1002 W. 11th Street (Monday through Saturday). Additionally, the committee is seeking proposals from local artists to create "Presentation Bowls," which will be presented to major sponsors of this year's event.
