A canine distemper warning alert has been issued to residents of Harris County, Texas, by the Veterinary Public Health (VPH) agency of Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services. The organization urges vaccination of dogs and ferrets against the virus, immediate treatment for animals believed to be infected, and taking measures to prevent the exposure of domestic animals to raccoons. Raccoons may carry the disease. A press release issued by VPH on April 20, 2010, reveals that 20 dogs brought to the county shelter in the preceding two weeks displayed signs of infection. Four Houston merchants participating in the annual Spring Fling on 19th Street sale and celebration have made SNAP their beneficiary for the event. Doubly exciting is the news that Neil Sackheim, SNAP board member and partner in Carter & Cooley Deli, has announced that he will personally match the funds raised by the four businesses. The businesses supporting SNAP include Carter & Cooley Deli, 18 Hands Gallery, Gen’s Antiques, and Mercader Antiques. Over 30 merchants are participating in the event, and each has chosen a charity to support. SNAP has recently completed translating each of its clinic web pages into Spanish and creating a new clinic overview page that provides links to the clinic pages in each language. Each clinic page also now provides a link to reach the alternate language version of the page.
SNAP has a large Hispanic clientele, and providing Spanish-language versions of these pages will make it easier for those with limited English-language skills to find the information they need to help the animals in their lives. SNAP is thrilled to announce that our volunteers set a new record by raising $23,169 in funds at the spring 2010 Bayou City Art Festival! That total includes over $9,000 in tips and over $14,000 in proceeds from beverage sales. The funds raised will be used to continue SNAP programs to prevent the suffering and death of dogs and cats due to overpopulation and preventable diseases, especially in low-income areas.
