Over $9 million in grants awarded to partners in South Texas
San Antonio, TX – Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM)- the largest faith-based, nonprofit, private funding source for community healthcare services to low-income families and the uninsured in South Texas, announced it will be investing $33 million in healthcare services for low income families and the uninsured through the charitable clinics and programs it owns and operates, as well as through grants awarded to other organizations throughout South Texas during 2009.
According to estimates from the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research at UTSA, 24.5 percent of Bexar County residents were uninsured in 2005—the same rate as the entire state of Texas, which has the highest rate of uninsured in the U.S. “The availability of affordable health care services is disproportionate to the need for them. Locally, less than half of those in need are able to access services. This will no doubt increase as the ripples from our economic crisis impacts families in our community who have already struggled with job loss, the rising cost of food and energy.” commented Kevin C. Moriarty, president and chief executive officer at MHM.
“We are pleased to support organizations that share Methodist Healthcare Ministries’ mission of serving the least served,” continued Moriarty. “We are fortunate at MHM to have a board of directors that understands the necessity of partnering with these organizations, without which many in our communities would not have access to health care or support services for their families.”
In addition to its programs and services, next year MHM will invest an additional $9,240,495 in health and humanservices-related programs serving low-income families and the uninsured in South Texas.
Since its inception, MHM has provided over $203 million in healthcare services through its clinics and programs as well as through our partnerships, and has the unique distinction of being the largest private funding source for community healthcare to the indigent and uninsured in San Antonio and South Texas. In 2008, MHM provided over $18 million in funding through its partnerships in Bexar County and throughout South Texas.
MHM partners with a select group of organizations whose missions and services fit within MHM’s organizational objectives, set forth by the board of directors. As a result, MHM does not accept unsolicited proposals for funding.
