During the holidays we take the time to think about what we are grateful for: our family, our friends, our freedom. The generosity of our supporters.
But what about the other half of the population that doesn't have a voice in the solving the worlds problems? Or in creating the innovation that could save us? What about another generation of girls falling behind in math, science and technology and cutting themselves short of a successful future? I started Girlstart over 11 years ago because of one simple fact: girls were missing out on opportunities in math, science, engineering and technology. This problem still plagues us. This has huge implications for our world. You have the power to change it.
Girlstart is shaping not only the lives of the girls we serve, we are empowering a generation to step up and make a difference in all our lives through innovation and excellence in math, science, technology and engineering. When you think of giving gifts, please think about giving to Girlstart. What better gift than an investment in our future?
Thank You and Happy Holidays,
Founder, Executive Director

SXSW ScreenBurn Interviews Girlstart
Girlstart will present a panel titled "Gaming as a Gateway Drug: Getting Girls Interested in Technology" at South by Southwest (SXSW) in March 2009. ScreenBurn recently interviewed Girlstart's Technology and Program Coordinator, Dee Kapila at Girlstart.
SXSW: What inspired your panel topic?
DK: The panel topic was inspired by two forces: my own personal love of video games and my unique experience at Girlstart. My father was a devoted gamer who instilled in me a deep appreciation of games at an early age. He also needed a buddy to play with! And Girlstart is dedicated to remaining on the cutting edge in delivering technology programs to girls.
SXSW: You mention using video games to draw girls into STEM fields. What kind of game play attracts girls in your experience?
DK: Our girls have played both online and console games. But when they are new to gaming, it's important to remember how critical it is that girls feel supported and encouraged in an all-girl environment. That's exactly what Girlstart has always provided.
