UTSA Institute for Cyber Security Hosts World-Renowed Cyber Security Expert Eugene Spafford on Nov. 18
Press Release

November, 2008

(San Antonio)- The University of Texas at San Antonio Institute for Cyber Security (ICS) welcomes Professor Eugene Spafford, world-renowned cyber security expert, for a presentation “Information Security: Some Past Successes, Some Future Challenges” at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering Building Room 2.102 on the 1604 Campus.  At the event, the UTSA Institute for Cyber Security will also officially launch a new ICS Internet security incubator, designed to develop and assist in commercializing promising technologies that address major cyber security and privacy issues.

Spafford serves as Executive Director of the Purdue University Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS). Since 1987, he’s also served as a professor with an appointment in Computer Science at Purdue and has been awarded courtesy titles as a professor of Philosophy, a professor of Communication and a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 2007, Spafford agreed to serve as Executive Director of the Advisory Board for The University of Texas at San Antonio Institute for Cyber Security.

One of the most senior and recognized leaders in the field of computing, Spafford has an on-going record of accomplishment as a senior advisor and consultant on issues of security and intelligence, education, cybercrime and computing policy to a number of major companies, law enforcement organizations, academic and government agencies, including Microsoft, Intel, Unisys, the US Air Force, the National Security Agency, the GAO, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Justice, the Department of Energy, and two Presidents of the United States.

With nearly three decades of experience as a researcher and instructor, Spafford has worked in software engineering, reliable distributed computing, host and network security, digital forensics, computing policy, and computing curriculum design. He is responsible for a number of "firsts" in several of these areas.

“One thing I learned from establishing and running CERIAS is that the more people dedicated to enhancing the practice of computer security, the better,” said Spafford. “I am honored to be involved with the Institute for Cyber Security at UTSA -- it is a welcome addition to the academic community. ICS has strong institutional and local support, world-class leadership, and enthusiastic community support -- all critical elements for long-term success.  I am particularly impressed with the launch of the ICS incubator, which has already begun working with some very interesting young companies in the application security space.”

Spafford serves on a number of advisory and editorial boards, and has been honored numerous times for his writing, research, and teaching on issues of security and ethics. This includes receiving nearly every major award in the field of cyber security, and every award Purdue gives for excellence in teaching and educational development.

He received his doctoral degree in informational and computer science and his master’s degree in information and computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  His bachelor’s of arts degree with a double major in mathematics and computer science came from the State University College at Brockport, New York.
