For the eighth year in a row, Dallas has had the highest crime rate for cities over a million people. The Department’s Safer Dallas, Better Dallas initiative is working to raise funds in order to equip police officers with new equipment, technology, training, and advertising money to boost officer recruitment. The groundbreaking contribution from the W.W. Caruth Jr. Foundation Fund will assist in this mission. The Department received the first $5 million dollar installment from the Foundation last year, using it to buy cell phones for detectives, in-car cameras and cages for squad cars. The additional funds in 2006 and 2007 will be used to provide for the design, planning, and implementation of an innovative investment that will ensure the sustainable capacity of the DPD to serve the community and reduce the crime rate.
