Neuropathy Awareness Week May 7-13
Neuropathy Alliance of Texas

April, 2017

Neuropathy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects 1 in 15 people (that’s over 122,000 in the Austin area and more people affected than Alzheimer’s, HIV, and Parkinson’s combined).  Organizations nationwide will be raising awareness to increase public interest in finding a cure and to educate the community, resulting in earlier and more effective diagnoses.

Neuropathy Alliance of Texas (NATX), the only 501(c)3 non-profit in Central Texas that provides support groups, Tai Chi classes, and educational resources to neuropathy patients and caregivers, will be celebrating Neuropathy Awareness Week May 7-13, 2017 with other organizations nationwide.  Events that week include:

  1. Monday, May 8, 1:00 – 2:30 PM- Support group meeting in Georgetown (2423 Williams Dr., Suite 101, Georgetown, TX 78628).  Chris McKee, CNC will talk about anti-inflammatory foods for neuropathy, nutritional supplements, and how gut health influences brain chemistry.
  2. Tuesday, May 9, 7:05 PM- Baseball game at the Round Rock Express. NATX is the spotlight non-profit, and $3 from your game ticket will benefit NATX.  Purchase your tickets at rrexpress.com/may9. When purchasing, please type “natx” as your coupon code.
  3. Thursday, May 11, 6-8 PM- Jewelry shopping and champagne event at Kendra Scott’s Central Austin location.  20% of sales proceeds will benefit NATX’s programming.  3800 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78756 or phone orders can be made (512-879-3422)- participants must mention they are with NATX.
  4. Thursday, May 11, 9 – 10:30 AM- Tai Chi class in Georgetown.  Techniques are geared toward neuropathy patients and all levels are welcome.  Please contact info@neuropathyalliancetx.org to participate.
  5. Saturday, May 13, 10:30 AM – 12 PM- Support group meeting in Westlake Hills (7127 Bee Cave Rd., Austin, TX 78746).  NATX will play an informational video discussing “The Emotional Side of Living with a Chronic Disease” followed by group discussion.

Symptoms of neuropathy may include burning pain, numbness, and extreme weakness in the arms and legs.  There is currently no cure, so patients are left with treating the symptoms and potentially dealing with a reduced quality of life.  Diagnosis can take years, partly because many people have never heard of neuropathy, so awareness is crucial in helping people affected get an earlier diagnosis which will increase the chances of receiving effective treatment.  Neuropathy Alliance of Texas’s mission is to accelerate research and to empower the neuropathy community to live their best lives. NATX's vision is that anyone in Texas with or affected by neuropathy receives the support and education they need to more effectively handle the disease and live to their fullest potential.
