Adding Basketball a Slam Dunk
Recently, more than 1,000 San Antonio Sports i play! afterschool athletes got their first taste of organized basketball at Mission Concepción Sports Park after five weeks of training. Over the past years, surveys of our students and parents indicated the desire to add basketball to the established i play! afterschool sports of soccer, track, volleyball and tennis. When we bid on the 2018 NCAA® Final Four® three years ago, we made a commitment to the NCAA that we would incorporate basketball into our afterschool program and do it in a special way that leads into next year's Final Four. Our first goal for the new basketball module was to provide the highest quality early-stage development programming. Our team worked closely with USA Basketball to create the new curriculum for coaches and participants. This is the first time USA Basketball has developed a program-specific curriculum and we are grateful for their support.

Thanks to the NCAA and program sponsor, Northwestern Mutual, next year's i play! afterschoolbasketball tournament will be integrated into the Final Four weekend. Our final four i play! afterschoolqualifying teams will face off on center court inside the NCAA's Fan Fest on Friday, March 30, 2018, in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.  All i play!participants and their families will be invited to Fan Fest to cheer on our final four teams while experiencing the NCAA's interactive fan zone before it opens to the public. We are also providing a few additional perks throughout the 2018 season, including special jerseys, invitations to local college basketball games and appearances at i play! afterschool practice sessions by local college athletes.

A big thanks to our i play! coaches and school district coordinators for taking on a new sport. We can't wait for next year!

Volunteer Spotlight: IBC Bank

Having employee groups volunteer at San Antonio Sports' events is a win-win: San Antonio Sports can fill a lot of shifts and the camaraderie between employees makes serving together more fun. One group that frequently shares its time and talent is IBC Bank.

"IBC Bank feels that it is important for our employees to give back to the community," says Sera Gervais, president of the Employee Advisory Board, Charitable & Community Development Corporation at IBC Bank. "Donating our time helps to develop a sense of accomplishment and identity amongst our team members. When we give to San Antonio, we grow with San Antonio."

Sera points out that volunteers help for their own reasons, whether it's raising awareness for a cause, or donating or fostering the development of their local community. The common denominator is making lifelong friends at each event.

One of the most memorable events for IBC Bank volunteers was the 2016 San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. "Our volunteers loved helping the runners register and check-in prior to the event and had even more fun congratulating them at the end!" said Sera.

Sera highly recommends San Antonio Sports to any other organizations who are interested in volunteer opportunities. "Besides the great impact that they make on San Antonio's youth, San Antonio Sports is organized and always makes their volunteering experiences fun and enjoyable. They also provide parking, meals, fun t-shirts and cool swag bags. What more could a volunteer ask for?"

"The IBC Bank volunteers would like to thank San Antonio Sports and its director of volunteers Tony Benke for recognizing us," said Sera. "Our strong partnership with their team will hopefully continue to thrive for years to come. We look forward to being a part of their events in the future!"

If you'd like to join IBC Bank employees as a volunteer at a San Antonio Sports event, please visit our web site at SanAntonioSports.org/volunteer.
