St. Pius X High School and St. Rose of Lima Catholic School Partner for Homeless Veterans Drive
St. Pius X High School

January, 2017

St. Pius X High School, in partnership with St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, is holding a drive to benefit the Volunteers of America Texas’ Homeless Veteran’s Reintegration Program (HVRP).

Organized by St. Pius X’s Students Serving Soldiers club, the drive for homeless veterans begins immediately and runs through National Catholic Schools Week until Friday, February 3.

Items to donate include gently used clothing, NEW undergarments and socks, toiletries, blankets and sleeping bags. Items may be dropped off at St. Pius X High School (811. W. Donovan Street) or St. Rose of Lima Catholic School (3600 Brinkman St.).

SPX’s Students Serving Soldiers began in the fall of 2016 as sophomore Nina Martinez set out to help veterans in need.

"I just wanted to find a way to show some gratitude," said Martinez. "It's really personal because having veterans in my own family, if that (being homeless) were to happen it would be really heartbreaking.”

Darryl Harper, HVRP Outreach Coordinator, said he looks forward to partnering with St. Pius X and St. Rose in this community effort.

"On a personal note I'm totally overwhelmed,” said Harper. “I'm a Vietnam veteran, Marine. When we came home there wasn't much but, you know, an initiative like this from students is just totally fantastic."

HVRP provides a foundation of hope to veterans in the Houston area by offering an array of services including case management, assistance in accessing benefits and services, career counseling, job readiness workshops, job placement assistance, vocational training and a computer resource center.

St. Pius X High School is Houston’s premier co-ed Catholic high school. Founded in 1956 by the Dominican Sisters of Houston, young men and women at St. Pius X embrace academic excellence and integrity, celebrate the community's diverse gifts and heritage, and embody social justice and service.

St. Rose of Lima School is an accredited Catholic Pre-K through middle school that offers strong academics, extracurricular activities and a nurturing environment.
