January E-Newsletter: Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Children at Risk

January, 2017

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month and the National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month in Texas. As we reflect on our freedoms and what they will allow us to achieve in 2017, we must also remember those who have no freedom, those who remain bonded to human trafficking, and those who are susceptible targets for human traffickers. This month, we acknowledge their struggle and pain, and recommit to protecting our most vulnerable men, women, and children, providing rehabilitation to survivors of trafficking, stopping the demand for trafficking, and holding traffickers accountable for their actions.

We are starting this year off strong. As the Super Bowl approaches in Houston, the anti-human trafficking community's message is clear - Houston has zero tolerance for human trafficking. Our law enforcement partners stand ready to arrest and prosecute offenders. Along with the City of Houston and other nonprofit partners, we continue to sound the alarm to raise awareness and increase community support and victim identification. Our partners who provide direct services are ready to welcome victims and give them the tools needed to better their lives.

In Austin, we are introducing seven pieces of legislation to combat human trafficking. Join us for our Human Trafficking Advocacy Day on January 25th, 2017 at 11:00 am on the South Steps of the Capitol. With your support, we can shut down brothels hidden in plain sight, provide a cohesive curriculum for john schools in Texas, collect more data on human trafficking and prostitution arrests across Texas, strengthen laws to reduce online promotion of prostitution, and allow victims of human trafficking to set aside nonviolent convictions that were a result of being trafficked.

The fight against human trafficking is incredibly difficult. However, through collaboration, education, and community support, we can stop traffickers, rescue victims, and eliminate the demand for human trafficking in Texas. We thank you for your continued support and commitment to end the trafficking and exploitation of children in Texas and beyond.
