Texas to Celebrate Special Olympics Founder on Sept. 24
Special Olympics Texas

September, 2016

Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) will join Special Olympics chapters around the world on Saturday, Sept. 24 in celebrating the global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day (EKS Dayto commemorate the life, mission and accomplishments of its founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

For the last seven years, EKS Day has been observed on the fourth Saturday of September for memorializing Shriver’s legacy. SOTX traditionally holds several events in her honor across the state during the week leading up to the observed holiday. SOTX’s 2016 EKS Day events will run between Sept. 22-24. SOTX encourages everyone to act in honor of Eunice Kennedy Shriver by promoting inclusion in local communities and supporting its athletes as they compete in various events across the entire state. Individuals and families who have no prior involvement with Special Olympics are urged to come to any of the events and participate. See the list of events below.

In proclaiming global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, Mary Davis, CEO of Special Olympics said, “Today, we celebrate the legacy of an extraordinary leader who was a champion for people with intellectual disabilities all over the world. Furious at their exclusion from society nearly 50 years ago, she had a vision that sports could build confidence and skills. And, that sports could demonstrate to the world the abundance of talents of people with intellectual disabilities and connect them into society. She founded Special Olympics as a vehicle to make that happen. Her legacy is the important work Special Olympics does every day – through sports, health services, education and changing policy and attitudes. Let us appropriately honor her legacy by joining together in sports, in communities across the country, people with and without intellectual disabilities playing on teams together, playing unified!"

Since 2010, EKS Day has been celebrated around the world, bringing together people with and without intellectual disabilities in various activities to honor the inspiration, impact and indomitable spirit of Shriver. While four million Special Olympics athletes and millions of coaches, families, fans and friends live her legacy and lead our movement every day, the world unites on EKS Day in over 100 countries and thousands of communities to show the world the power of unity to create opportunities of acceptance.
