Fall Means Football
A new school year means a new season of high school football has begun! And that means planning for our annual San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game presented by H-E-B is in full force. The game, which is the culmination of successful high school football careers for area seniors, will take place Jan. 7 in the Alamodome. A selection committee will meet soon to review nominations from area high school coaches and choose the teams that will represent the East and West. Last year, more than 100 athletes from 52 high schools played in the game, with 34 committing to play in college. Our game will kick off at 5 p.m. following the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which begins at 12 p.m. and includes the top 90 high school football athletes in the country. Tickets, which are good for both games, go on sale Oct. 1.

And what would a football game be without cheerleaders? The  San Antonio Sports All-Star Cheer Challenge powered by CPS Energy is underway. We're registering cheer squads now and online voting begins Oct. 17. The top four vote-getters will win the opportunity to cheer at either the nationally televised (NBC) U.S. Army All-American Bowl or the locally televised (CW35) San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game. The top two squads will also win $500 and $250 grants, respectively. Last year, more than 250,000 votes were cast!

We'll announce our all-star athletes in mid-October via social media (search #SA_AllStarGame) and in partnership with Sinclair Broadcasting stations FOX29, CW35 and News 4 San Antonio, including their weekly Thursday Night Lights broadcasts. We'll notify the winning cheer squads on Dec. 5.

See you on the gridiron!
Valor Games Southwest

Later this month, San Antonio Sports will again host the Valor Games Southwest, an adaptive sport competition for veterans and service members with a physical disability. In the words of Art Kiolbossa, COO of supporting sponsor, World Car, "Valor is much more than just a word. It's a spirit in the character that rises with strengths and battles with everything that you have." The men and women who participate in this introductory-level competition can learn more about the world of adaptive sports, which often plays an important role in the rehabilitation process. In addition to competitions in cycling, table tennis, power lifting, archery, Boccia ball, air guns and rowing, participants receive complimentary lodging and meals.

All Can Ski

San Antonio Sports All Can Ski, a waterskiing clinic for people with physical disabilities, celebrated its 24th anniversary this year. Almost 50 individuals of all ages got to experience the thrill of waterskiing on the ski lakes at San Marcos River Ranch. Due to construction at the SeaWorld Ski Lake, the event's host venue since its inception two decades ago, All Can Ski was held at this new location. San Marcos River Ranch is a private ski community in Martindale, TX, enclosing four competition ski lakes nestled along the beautiful San Marcos River. One of our skiers, Crystal, made a video that conveys the sheer joy and fun of All Can Ski. Take a moment to watch and enjoy.

Fit Family Challenge Finale
The 2016 Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas came to a close at the District 6 Fitness 5K at Wolff Stadium on Aug. 13. The rain held off and more than 1,100 came out to run, jog or walk and enjoy being fit together. Our final $1,000 winner, Amanda Guadiano, was thrilled to have some extra cash for a last minute family vacation before school started. Congratulations as well to our three grand prize winners who took home a $1,000 gift card to either Valero, H-E-B or Academy Sports + Outdoors. David Rodriguez, Laura Mendoza and Melissa Alvarez each had at least 400 points from attending weekly Fit Family Challenge Zumba® classes, receiving health screenings and attending Big Events throughout the 12-week program.

Thanks to all our sponsors, especially Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas for supporting the Fit Family Challenge and helping provide a summer full of free family fitness fun.
