Girl Scouts awards $34,000 in scholarships to 29 graduating seniors

The Emerald Circle of the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) recognized 29 young women at the organization’s annual Gold Award Merit Scholarship presentation held April 10, awarding a total of $34,000 in scholarships. The merit-based scholarships are reserved for Girl Scouts who have earned the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. 

Recipients were required to submit a scholarship application, including a resume, essay, and a description of their Gold Award project.

2016 Emerald Circle scholarship recipients are:

·         Amaryllis Fernandes (home zip code: 77025), St. Agnes Academy, Judy Kunkel Memorial Scholarship for $3,000, presented in memory of Kunkel, a long-time Girl Scout volunteer and professional educator.

·         Lauren Loh (zip: 77025), St. Agnes Academy, Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation Scholarship for $2,500, honoring the Alkeks, Texas philanthropists involved in various community issues, especially in support of education.

·         Jamie Smith (zip: 77401), St. Agnes Academy, Robert H. and Joanne M. Williams Family Scholarship for $2,000, funded since 2002 by a GSSJC family with three daughters, all of whom earned the Gold Award.

·         Ashley Song (zip: 77479), Dulles High School, Sugar Land, Ervan Chew Memorial Scholarship for $1,000, funded by the GSSJC Board of Directors to honor former board member Ervan Chew, a prominent community leader and volunteer, who died in 1999 while serving on the board.

·         Five recipients were designated as Goodykoontz Scholars.  This special recognition is given to recipients whose Gold Award projects exemplify the Girl Scout Promise and Law. The designation honors lifetime Girl Scout Dorothy Goodykoontz, founder and past president of The Emerald Circle.  Each of the Goodykoontz Scholars received Emerald Circle Gold Award Merit Scholarships for $1,000:

o   Srini Shah, Seven Lakes High School, Katy (zip: 77494)

 

·         One Emerald Circle Gold Award Merit Scholarship for $1,500 was awarded to:

 

o   Kalpana Vaidya, Stephen F. Austin High School, Sugar Land (zip: 77479)

 

Other Gold Award Merit Scholarships for $1,000 were presented to:

o   Madeleine Easter, Montgomery High School (zip: 77356)

The young women plan to attend a variety of Texas colleges and universities, including Rice University, University of Houston, University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Stephen F. Austin University and St. Edward’s University in Austin.  Some will go out of state for college to Stanford University, Stanford, CA; Tulane University, New Orleans, LA; Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA; Warren Wilson College, Asheville, NC; Georgetown University, Washington, DC; Howard University, Washington, DC; Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, and Fordham University, New York, NY.  One scholarship recipient has been accepted by the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.

Scholarship recipients joined their families and friends to celebrate at a reception following the presentation ceremony at the Houston Girl Scout Center. 

 

The Emerald Circle is Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council’s scholarship selection committee established in 1992. Since then, it has awarded more than 400 scholarships totaling nearly $600,000 to Girl Scouts who have earned the Gold Award, Girl Scouts highest honor.
