I'm Going Over the Edge

I believe I am about to fulfill the last item on my bucket list. On Saturday, May 7, I will join the daredevils in our youth department--Mandy and Sara--to rappel down 15 stories at the Marriott Rivercenter hotel. San Antonio Sports is teaming with Junior Achievement of South Texas on a new adventure fundraiser--Over the Edge. You can you can join us or support us!."Edgers" who raise a minimum $1,000 are assigned a time to rappel. Mandy and Sara are well on their way to reaching their goal!
I am going head to head with Linda Rimer, the president of Junior Achievement, to raise $10,000 and I would appreciate your support. I'm no mountaineer, but I'm committed to going over the edge to raise funds and awareness for the good work San Antonio Sports and Junior Achievement do in our community.
We have also made Over the Edge a part of the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup presented by Humana.  Individuals who sign up to become "edgers" are able to earn charity challenge points for their company teams. Click here to learn more about the Corporate Cup Charity Challenge.
Won't you join us by either helping me, Mandy or Sara reach our fundraising goals or committing to go over the edge yourself? You can donate now to RussMandy or Sara by clicking on our name or visit our website to learn more and go over the edge with us. There are only 90 slots!
Hall of Fame an Extraordinary Evening

From beginning to end, the 2016 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute presented by AT&T was an incredible evening filled with special moments. We won't soon forget larger-than-life Shaquille O'Neal ripping emcee Don Harris' jacket at the seams while entertaining us with his commentary, Darold Williamson inspiring us all with his gold medal life story, George Block's relaying the story of motivating a young swimmer's dream and relating it to the transformational power of sport, and the display of love and respect by the 1989 Cole High School State Championship basketball team for their coach and teammates. A very poised 11-year-old, Allison Escobedo, sharing how participating in San Antonio Sports' i play! afterschool program has changed her life brought it all home, as the proceeds from the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute will make a real difference in the lives of thousands of young girls and boys in San Antonio.

We netted over $350,000 to support San Antonio Sports and its youth and community programs which will provide critical funds for us to fulfill our mission to transform our community through the power of sport.

We will close at 80 teams and we're more than half-way there. Registering sooner rather than later also gives you the opportunity to maximize your charity challenge donations by allowing plenty of time for food, clothing or blood drives. Or to find the perfect person to go Over the Edge.
Details about registering, tailgating and the charity challenge can be found on the Corporate Cup web site:

New SPARK Opens
The latest SPARK (school park) opened recently at North East ISD's Hidden Forest Elementary. The school now has a running track and other fitness amenities that can enjoyed by students during the day and the neighborhood after school hours. San Antonio Sports leads this local effort to turn elementary and middle school property into playgrounds and park space. Fourteen SPARKs have been completed since 2012, with five planned for 2016.

Funds will support this after school program that provides daily fundamental training in five sports for 1,100 third through fifth graders at two inner-city school districts. Children also receive lessons about nutrition and character, plus leadership and team-building skills. For more information about i play! click here.
In Her Own Words: i play! afterschool participant Allison E.
Allison Escobedo had everyone's attention when she spoke at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute. We wanted to share her heartfelt speech. Next month, we'll share her mother's.
Good evening my name is Allison Escobedo and I attend Stonewall-Flanders Elementary in the fabulous Harlandale Independent School District. I would like to start by saying thank you to everyone who donates money to the i play program. Let me tell you why. The i play program gives us 60 minutes of activity every day, and that's a lot considering we only get 15 minutes or even 10 minutes at recess at school.
So far volleyball has been my favorite sport and I wish we had more than 60 minutes to practice. I also get to socialize with younger kids, make friendships, and am able to set a good example for them. The i play program has helped me with my eating habits and makes me feel better physically. There's a lot of pressure on a fifth grade girl, a middle child, and a sexual assault survivor to look and act a certain way. I play helps a lot with my confidence.
I also want to tell you about my awesome, funny, great and amazing coach. Coach Andersonknows when to be funny and cracks us up and also knows when to be serious and really teach us the sport. This is kind of my therapy when I am down. So let's keep i play alive.
Before we leave to night I have a few special thank you's:
Mr. Harvey Najim thank you for supplying the grant money for uniforms.
H-E-B my little brother says thank you for all the snacks.
Silver Eagle, my parents say thank you for all their snacks.
Mr. O'Neal, my second grade teacher wanted me to give you a wink.
To everyone here thank you and please continue to give money so that more kids can have the opportunity of the life-changing effects of i play.
