Texas State University

October, 2015

United State Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will welcome 51 immigrants from 25 countries as they are sworn in as new U.S. citizens the morning of Thursday, October 8 at Texas State University.

U.S. District Judge Robert L. Pitman, district of Western Texas, will preside over the ceremony, with assistance by USCIS. Special remarks will be provided Margarita Arellano, dean of students at Texas State.

The immigrants who will be naturalized originally came from Brazil, Burma, Cameroon, Canada, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Panama, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Venezuela and Vietnam.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by congress. After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and responsibilities that the constitution gives to native-born U.S. citizens, including the right to vote.  During fiscal year 2014, approximately 777,000 immigrants were naturalized nationwide.
