Riley Blatz Named SOTX Male Athlete of the Year
Special Olympics Texas

October, 2015

Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) officially announced its statewide Athletes and Coach of the Year for 2015 on Tuesday.  Among the five recipients for these awards Riley Blatz (Round Rock, Texas) has been named the Male Athlete of the Year for the 15-21 age range.

Blatz, a Central Texas-area SOTX athlete, will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony on Friday, Oct. 9 in Bryan/College Station during the 2015 SOTX Fall Classic competition.

Along with Blatz, Rockwall’s Scott Wendt was tabbed Male Athletes of the Year for the 22+ age group, while Friendswood’s Kayla Gray earned Female Athlete of the Year honors for the 15-21 age range and Southlake’s Kathryn Albertini earned the award for the 22+ age range. Rockwall’s Rose Antony was named SOTX’s Coach of the Year. The organization will announce the recipients of 10 other award categories later this week.

“Riley is one of our outstanding athletes who represent our program with such class.,” said Jan Sartain, head of delegation for the Round Rock ISD Roadrunners. “He always demonstrates the enthusiasm, desire and excitement to be a better athlete through his work ethic and determination. He loves sports, loves competing and is a great team leader.”

Blatz first got involved with SOTX in 2009, beginning his participation while in middle school. Since joining the Round Rock ISD Roadrunners, he has trained and competed every single year in three sports or more since 2009.

Throughout his SOTX career, Blatz has been a multisport athlete, competing in aquatics, basketball, cycling and track. Once he was in high school, he moved up to Unified basketball from the 5-on-5 basketball team. He has competed at the Area and Chapter level competitions in Aquatics and Athletics for four years.

Sartain states that Blatz excels most prominently in swimming, which has enabled him to be a part of the Lone Star Aquatics team and the Round Rock H.S. swim team. However, his competitive drive has enabled him to excel in track and field.

“He enjoys running longer distances (800 meters, 1500 meters), in part because of the personal challenge that comes with running those distances,” Sartain added. “Many athletes are averse to the physical challenges of races such as these; Riley thrives on the challenge.”

A year after earning his Round Rock High School letterman’s jacket, Blatz represented Team Texas in Track & Field at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey. Later that summer, he trained to become a Global Messenger, and he has presented several times on behalf of Special Olympics Texas and Round Rock ISD.
