Children At Risk

July, 2015

During the 84th Texas Legislative session, CHILDREN AT RISK (C@R) was able to pass10 priority bills that have ALL been signed into law by Governor Abbott. We testified 55 times in support of 39 bills throughout the course of the session. New laws direct funding to evidence-based parenting programs, widen access to quality Pre-K programs, bring awareness to Post-Partum Depression and enhance the state’s response to the human traffickingDon't miss out on your chance to hear about these bills at one of our three Legislative Debriefs. Save the date on 8/6 in Houston and 8/18 in both Dallas and Fort Worth to learn from experts how the decisions made by the Texas Legislature will impact our children.

Looking ahead, C@R is also celebrating exciting changes and office expansion. We welcome our newest team members Paul Carter, Leah Halley, Marissa Johnston, Kiki Martire, and Ellen Stauffer to the Houston Office. Together with our fantastic Board, community partners and legislative champions, we will continue to make Texas a happier, healthier and safer place for kids to grow up.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bob Sanborn

HEALTHY FOOD, HEALTHY FAMILIES
C@R is working with community partners on a Healthy Corner Store initiative to assure that every family in North Texas has access to the foods that help support a balanced diet and ultimately a healthier life. In Dallas County alone, a staggering 36% of ZIP codes contain areas of limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Residents without easy access to supermarkets frequently turn to convenience stores, corner stores or other small food retailers for their food purchases. These stores often cannot source fresh food, and their inventory mainly consists of highly processed options. However, for the almost 700,000 residents of Dallas County, including over 245,000 children, who live in lower income communities with limited supermarket access, healthy food options could be just around the cornerClick here to learn more about the benefits of a Healthy Corner Store Program.
