slamNEW: I Slam, Therefore I Am with Joaquín Zihuatanejo

students-discussion.jpg

Saturday July 11th, 2015

12 PM - 3 PM

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

The first rule of slam club is everyone talks about slam club!  This is a dream of mine, to spread the art of poetry slam across the country.  A poetry slam is a spoken word poetry competition where poets don't slam other poets...no.  They slam their papers to the ground as they breathe life into their poems with performance and voice and nuance.

Through interactive exercises, quick writes, writing prompts, and modeling you will get a first hand look at how to create an astonishing performance or slam poem.  This workshop will be lead by the only poet on the entire planet to win the Individual World Poetry Slam Championship held here in North America and the European World Cup of Poetry Slam Championship held in Paris, France, Joaquín Zihuatanejo.

about Joaquín Zihuatanejo:

Joaquín Zihuatanejo is a poet, spoken word artist, and award-winning teacher. Born and raised in the barrio of East Dallas, in his work Joaquín strives to capture the duality of the Chicano culture. A National Poetry Slam Finalist, Grand Slam Spoken Word Champion, and HBO Def Poet, Joaquín has performed his poetry at universities, conferences and poetry slams all over the Unites States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. In 2005, Joaquin was featured on season five of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry for HBO.

For seven years Joaquín was an award-winning English and creative writing public high school teacher for ninth and eleventh grade students inspiring a new collection of poems from the classroom entitled Stand Up and Be Heard. For the last four years Joaquin has taken a break from his teaching position to tour North America and Europe teaching workshops and performing. Joaquin has shared a stage with Billy Collins, Saul Williams, E. Lynn Harris, Alicia Keys, and Maya Angelou among others.

Session 2: Monday-Friday July 27-31, 1-4 PM

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

We are back with the latest incarnation of our most highly regarded ZINE CAMP, voted "Best of 2012" by The Observer.

We're excited to bring to youth ages 10-19 this one-of-a-kind art and literature camp experience! In ZINE CAMP, your young adult will create his or her own "zine," learning the tools for written self-expression while exploring art (and ecological friendly) techniques behind zines and their production. We will also offer "afterwords" an opportunity to participate in a public reading and/or put work on-line.

with Lisa Huffaker:

Lisa Huffaker is a multi-dimensional artist whose work encompasses music, poetry, and visual art, and interweaves them all in performance. Her primary background is in classical singing. She holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory, and has sung with the Dallas Opera since 1999. Lisa is also an accomplished poet: since winning the Morton Marr Poetry prize in 2008, her poetry has been published in Southwest Review, Poet Lore, Southern Poetry Review, Measure, Able Muse, Mezzo Cammin, The Texas Observer and Southern Humanities Review, which recently nominated her for the Pushcart Prize. Lisa has taught creative writing with the Writer's Garret since 2010, where she creates an ongoing series of art-inspired creative adventures at the Nasher Sculpture Center. She has also taught creative writing through Big Thought's Thriving Minds program, where she mentored a poetry club at Lang Middle School.
