A golden age for Galveston is dawning--a golden age of generosity and gastronomy working together. In April, five epicurean master chefs and restaurateurs representing the Island’s culinary and hospitality industry, joined forces for a second year to support higher education and employment for Galveston College Foundation’s Universal Access Fund Endowment. Marty Miles, President of the Galveston Restaurant Association (GRA) and Board members John Zendt, and Dennis Byrd announced the Francisco “Paco” Vargas Culinary Arts and Hospitality $100K Scholarship at Galveston College. Myles Shelton, President of Galveston College and Paul Mendoza, Director of the Culinary Arts program accepted the scholarship gift which will be administered by the Foundation. Paco Vargas, Executive Chef and Proprietor, of Rudy & Paco Restaurant & Bar is one of the founding five members of The Five Fabulous Chefs who expressly created an annual spring event for the Universal Access Fund Endowment. Denise Vargas, Executive Chef-Rudy & Paco Restaurant & Bar, Ross Warhol, Executive Chef at Gaido’s the Pelican Club, Elizabeth Peraza, Executive Chef at Olympia The Grill at Pier 21, Robbin Murphy, Executive Chef, Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center, and Felipe Gonzalez, Executive Chef at The San Luis, Resort Spa & Conference Center are chefs and restaurants who continue to make this two-night affair possible. Armin Cantini, Karen Flowers, and Paulie Gaido and the five restaurateurs inspired the concept of the employer/industry and education event on the Galveston College campus.
