WHAT: The 2015 Meal for the Minds Luncheon
The Metrocare Auxiliary, a group of 168 volunteers, will host the luncheon, which includes an Edible Auction featuring sweet treats from Dallas’ top pastry chefs, bakeries, and well-known eateries. The luncheon also features an art sale of work by Art Focus XC, an elite group of juried Dallas artists.
Carrie Fisher, actress, writer, and daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, made her film debut in Shampoo and went on to become a cultural icon playing Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy. Since then she has starred in such hits as When Harry Met Sally, Hannah and Her Sisters and The Blues Brothers, to name a few. Her television credits include Laverne & Shirley, Sex and the City, and 30 Rock, for which she received an Emmy nomination.
Fisher’s bestselling novel, Postcards from the Edge, netted her the Los Angeles Pen Award for Best First Novel. Fisher penned the Postcards screenplay for the Oscar nominated film starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep. Three novels and two memoirs have followed: Delusions of Grandma, Surrender the Pink, The Best Awful, Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic. Fisher performed her one-woman stage version of Wishful Drinking on Broadway, which went on to be filmed for HBO and nominated for an Emmy Award. Fisher will reprise her role of Princess Leia in the much-anticipated Star Wars, Episode VII.
WHY: The 2015 Meal for the Minds annual luncheon will focus on bipolar disorder. In Dallas County, there is an estimated 62,000 individuals living with bipolar disorder. Metrocare currently treats more than 12,400 individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder each year. The need for such care in our community is pressing. Over the next couple of years, Metrocare will work strategically to expand its capacity to serve those with mental illness through public/private partnerships, training and research, and opening new centers in areas of greatest need.
