For the second straight year, St. Pius X High School juniors Kade Stewart and Rachel Hardy finished in the top 10 and earned All-State honors at the TAPPS State Golf Championship.
Stewart, a three-time state qualifier and two-time regional golf champion, finished third in a field of 41 of the best TAPPS 5A golfers in the state. He shot 149 (76-73).
“After day one, Kade was 4 shots back and within striking distance in sixth position,” head coach Jim Hardy said. “He played super on day two with a 30 degree drop in temperature and gusty winds. He hit it well enough to comeback from the 4-shot deficit, but could not get any putts to drop.”
After earning all-district and all-region honors the past two seasons, Hardy finished 10th to received all-state honors for the second year in a row. She shot 171 (84-87) and competed against 45 golfers. The girls team, consisting of Lacey Hardy, Macie Mateja, Ashley Solorio, Hollan Hall and Hardy, represented SPX well and finished eighth overall.
“The girls team enjoyed their trip to state, gained valuable experience and friendships, and were excited and proud to represent St. Pius X,” Coach Hardy said. “Rachel played well with the exception of never figuring out the bumpy greens and suffering a tough stretch between holes 8 & 11 on the first day, where she lost touch with the leaders.”
Rachel made no excuses about the bumpy greens.
“I just never figured them out, but some of the other girls did,” she said. “We all putted the same greens. I'll get them next year.”
“I believe she will,” Coach Hardy said.
The SPX family would like to congratulate the Panther golf team on a terrific season.
