St. Pius X High School boys soccer defeated Monsignor Kelly in the TAPPS bi-district playoff game on Saturday, Feb. 14 by a score of 2-0.
The Panther defense was on lockdown the entire game, led by senior goalkeeper Kosta Vastakis who had nine saves.
In the 15th minute, freshman Donovan Malone beat a defender one-on-one to give SPX their first lead of the game. In the 39th minute, freshman Nicolas Medina headed in a goal setup by junior Sam Hernandez off a Panther corner kick. This was the third time this season the Panthers defeated Kelly. SPX outscored Kelly 6-2 in those three matches.
The Panthers improve to 20-3 overall and also clinched a share of the TAPPS 3-5A district crown, a feat that had not been accomplished since 2006.
Next up, the Panthers face the winner between El Paso and Fort Worth Nolan. Location, date, and time will be announced following that game.
