Run, jump, play. Be active every day! Drink water and eat your fruits and veggies! More than 140,000 elementary school students in 230 San Antonio-area schools will participate in a fun program designed to motivate elementary students to be physically active and make water their primary drink of choice. The 2015 University Health System Go!Kids Challenge™ powered by San Antonio Sportsgot underway Jan. 19. The goal of the six-week program, which takes place Jan. 19 through Feb.27 is to educate children about the importance of routine exercise and proper nutrition, which will help in the fight against childhood obesity. This is the 12th anniversary of the program.
Participants track their activity and healthy eating on a special log. If they do one or more of the physical activities listed on the log at least five days a week, they’ll earn a FREE one-day ticket to SeaWorld San Antonio at the completion of the program. Activities are aligned with the FitnessGram® and include jumping rope, jumping jacks, running and walking, push-ups, curl-ups and more.
“We want to encourage kids to have healthy, active lives,” says Russ Bookbinder, President and CEO of San Antonio Sports. “This is one way to get them moving and thinking about what they put in their bodies.”
A kickoff press conference was held at Rayburn Elementary School on Thursday, Jan. 22, with special guests including Harlandale Superintendent Rey Madrigal, City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran and former collegiate (Notre Dame) and NFL (Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers) football player Tyreo Harrison. The entire student body performed a special fitness dance.
“One of San Antonio Sports’ vision points is to have healthy kids,” says Bookbinder. “Making the University Health System Go!Kids Challenge available to schools allows us to reach children,
their parents, teachers, school administrators and community leaders and have them join us in the fight against childhood obesity. We all know starting good habits early in life is the key to healthy adults.”
