New Benches

As we settled into our new facility, two great carpenters and GCBO volunteers made use of two left over roof joists from our new building construction. Billy Heck and Larry Pike made five beautiful and functional benches that we spaced around the decks and porches. Billy and Larry designed, cut, assembled, stained and delivered these great additions to our facilty. We are looking forward to sitting outside on our news decks once the weather cools off a little. Thank you Billy and Larry!

New Hours for a New Building

Beginning in October, we are expanding our weekly visitor hours of 9:00 to 4:00 to include Saturdays. Staff and volunteers will be present so that you can visit our sanctuary, take a bird walk, find something special in our store, or just visit with us. On Saturday, October 4th, GCBO executive director Cecilia Riley will lead a guided trail hike from 9:00 to 10:30 in search of migratory songbirds. Come on by and visit!

Birds and Blooms For the Holidays

The Lake Jackson Garden Club is sponsoring a luncheon and silent auction to benefit the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory and their new Cecilia Riley Avian Conservation Science Center. This event will be held at the Lake Jackson Civic Center and features Barbara Baker, floral designer and National Garden Club Inc. flower show instructor as well as Cecilia Riley, Executive Director at GCBO. Bidding will run from 10:00-1:00, the speakers will present from 10:00-12:00, and the luncheon will begin at noon. This event costs $20 and checks can be mailed to Sandra Johnson, 104 Waterlily, Lake Jackson, TX 77566 by October 27, 2014. Thank you for your support!

Monthly Bird Banding at GCBO

It's October and that means the winter birds may have arrived. There will also still be migrants and hummingbirds around too. In September we caught an adult female Rufous Hummingbird that is back for her fourth winter! The only way we know that is because she was banded here in October 2011. Bird banding this month will be on Saturday, October 18 from 8:00 until noon. Remember, the birds get up early so the earlier you are here the more you will see. Seeing birds in the hand is a great way to get kids excited about wildlife, but all ages are welcome. See the map on our webpage for directions or find a map by going to Mapquest or GoogleMaps. Note that some other navigators will not take you to the correct location.

Photo of the Month

This photo comes to us from Ruth Ann Willis. During XHX, she managed to snap this photo of her good friend Virginia Schilling wiping a tear away as she watched the hummingbird she had just adopted sit in her hand. Virginia was pretty overcome with awe about her tiny bird!
