Lawndale Artist Studio Program 2013-2014 Participating Artists Announcement

Lawndale Art Center is pleased to announce the residents for the ninth round of theLawndale Artist Studio Program. Artists selected for the program are Josh BernsteinJooYoung Choi and Lina Dib.

 

With an emphasis on emerging practices, the program will provide these artists with non-residential studio space for nine months (September 2014 - May 2015) on the third floor of Lawndale Art Center in the heart of the Museum District. The artists will have full access to their studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each artist will receive a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program and an initial $1500 unrestricted materials allowance. Artists working in all mediums were encouraged to apply. At the completion of the residency, works produced during the program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2015

 

The 2014-2015 residents were selected from 100 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals;Kimberly Davenport, Director and Chief Curator, Rice GalleryDavid Politzer, 2011-2012 Lawndale Studio Artist; and Katia Zavistovski, Curator and Lawndale Programming Committee member.

 

24 artists have participated in the Lawndale Artist Studio Program since 2007. Through the program, Lawndale has provided over $50,000 in direct financial support to local artists for the creation of new work.

About the Artists:

Josh Bernstein

Josh Bernstein works in a variety of media including sculpture, performance, drawing and printmaking.  His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Bryan Miller Gallery in Houston, and the Emergency Room Gallery at Rice University.  It has been reviewed in the Houston Chronicle and the Houston Press, as well as Artforum.com and Art Fag City.  Bernstein's work is included in several private collections and the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.  He received his B.A. from Amherst College and his M.F.A. from Mason Gross School of Art at Rutgers University.  He was born in New Hampshire and has lived in Houston for the past six years.

JooYoung Choi

JooYoung Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to Concord, New Hampshire by way of adoption. While completing her BFA  at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, she was reunited with her birth-family. In 2012 Choi received her MFA from Lesley University (MA).Through painting, video art, animation and puppetry she blends auto-biographical narrative with fantasy. Her artwork is organized around a paracosm (a highly structured imaginary world) called "The Cosmic Womb". Choi has been included in exhibitions across the United States and South Korea. In 2007 she received a Somerville Arts Council LCC Cultural Heritage Grant. Her work has been featured in The Boston Globe Side Kick, as well as Korean Quarterly.

Lina Dib

Lina Dib's installations and compositions range from the ethnographic to the experimental. She has received grants and awards from Canada's Social Science and Humanities Research Council, AMIDA's European training program, and Rice University's Humanities Research Center. She is an affiliate artist at the Topological Media Lab in Montreal and Tx/Rx labs in Houston. Dib has a PhD in Anthropology and is a teaching fellow at Rice University. Recent exhibits and publications include Hirsch Library Project (Museum of Fine Arts Houston), MURMURATIONS (Lawndale Art Center), Sheaf of Times (Rudolph Blume Fine Art; Yerba Buena Gardens; MOP Projects, Sydney, Australia), Microsoundtrack (Pitman Park; Rice University), The Forgetting Dis-ease: Making Time Matter (differences), Of Promises and Prototypes: The Archeology of the Future (LIMN).
