The Need for Training Standards

Hundreds of volunteer youth football coaches recently spent a Saturday afternoon learning from some of the best when San Antonio Sports' Coach Ed teamed up with USA Football for training and certification. Coach Ed lead clinician Doug Bugher, was joined by Grant Teaff, American Football Coaches Association executive director and former Baylor football coach, D.W. Rutledge, Texas High School Coaches Association executive director, Larry Coker, UTSA head football coach, Andy Ryland, master trainer for USA Football and David Wetzel, Reagan High School head coach. The youth football coaches learned more than proper coaching fundamentals and sport-specific conditioning. Discussion also focused on helping them understand why kids play and quit sports, how to engage with parents, teach life lessons through winning and losing, and advancing sportsmanship. Additionally, the training stressed the need for awareness of proper hydration as well as injury prevention and treatment.

Sports can be one of the great classrooms for teaching kids the principles of hard work, unselfishness, self-discipline, goal-setting and sportsmanship. Our collective goal must be to assure that those who provide early-stage development through coaching youth sports are properly trained and screened. This will allow every child to experience the love of and lessons learned through participating in sports.

That's why San Antonio Sports is supporting efforts to introduce legislation requiring that volunteer youth sports coaches who wish to coach children under the age of 14 have background checks and be screened for sex-offender status and have a minimum of 4 hours of coaches' education. Click here to read our white paper: The Need for Training Standards and Certification for Youth Sports Coaches. We welcome more discussion on raising the quality of education and screening of those volunteers that are going to influence our children. Please share your thoughts by emailing me atrbookbinder@sanantoniosports.org.

All Can Ski
If it's August, it's time for All Can Ski, the nation's largest waterskiing clinic for people with physical disabilities in the United States. All Can Ski is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year, and more than 100 individuals of all ages are expected to participate on the ski lake atSeaWorld San Antonio, including wounded military men and women. "For so many participants, this is a chance to leave wheelchairs and crutches on the dock and experience the thrill of waterskiing," said Ross Davis, a Paralympic gold medalist who has coordinated the event since 1995. San Antonio Sports has partnered with SeaWorld San Antonio as its host venue since the event began two decades ago. SeaWorld provides the venue at no cost and also provides complimentary admission to event volunteers and skiing participants. A few spots remain. To learn more, visitSanAntonioSports.org/allcanski.

The founders have been invited back this year, along with former guest auctioneerGeorge Strait, to receive the Soaring Eagle lifetime achievement award from Harley-Davidson.

San Antonio Sports is one of three charity beneficiaries of the annual event and proceeds from the evening are split between our non-profit, Easter Seals and St. Jude's Ranch for Children. International Tournament a Success
Fifteen teams from all over Texas played six teams from Mexico in the inaugural Bexar County Games presented by Ancira, Valero Missions Cup Premier Baseball Tournament last month. Players from both sides of the border enjoyed the competition and playing against teams with a different approach to the game. Click here to read David Hinojosa's story which ran in the Southside Reporter and Conexión. To see photos from the event, click here

The goal of the Bexar County Games presented by Ancira is to host top notch competitions in Bexar County facilities, which are some of the best venues in Texas. This allows local teams to play teams from around the county, region and from Mexico here in San Antonio instead of traveling to other venues in and outside of Texas. We also hope to develop the international competition opportunities by providing a higher caliber of competition, while at the same time growing sports tourism in San Antonio.

In November, we will host the Bexar County Games, presented by Ancira, SeaWorld Copa Rayados Internacional soccer tournament.
