News and Notes
  April 2014

Dear Alejandrina,

Knowing I love to read, a dear friend and role model gave me a book, "To Lead is to Serve" by Shar McBee. I often turn to the opening of the book for motivation....

There is a story in the Talmud about a king and his son. They loved each other very much but they could not get along, so the son left home and went far away. After a while, word reached the father that the son was not doing well. The king sent a message to the prince and said, "come home," but the prince was too proud. He sent a message back to his father, "I cannot." The king sent another message saying, "just turn around and come as far as you can and I will meet you wherever you are."

If we want to lead, we must learn to serve; if we want people to give to our cause, we have to meet them where they are.

Leading others means helping them fulfill their needs, wants, and dreams! This week is the 20th anniversary of the book and the opening story is as powerful to me today as it was when I received this precious gift several years ago.

Next week is The Big Give S.A. and I am excited to see our community come together to serve others. The purpose of San Antonio's first-ever 24-hour giving challenge is to bring awareness of the impact local nonprofits make in YOUR community! We hope to bring nonprofits and donors together, expand online giving, connect people to the causes that move them and, of course, make giving FUN. By turning giving into a shared city-wide experience, YOU can significantly impact the future of San Antonio and collectively move our city forward.

Thank you for helping Project MEND help others and for giving me the opportunity to serve you!

Project MEND believes everyone should have access to the medical equipment they need for rehabilitation and recovery! Community partners help us reach more people in need. This month we would like to spotlight Faith Family Clinic.

Faith Family Clinic exists to provide health and wellness services to the working uninsured and under-insured residents of our community. Their vision is that all working uninsured people and their families have access to the medical care they need. Project MEND believes in this mission and is proud to provide durable medical equipment to patients that can't afford to purchase these items on their own.

We want to give a big Thank You to The Texas Cavaliers for giving back to the children of San Antonio. Project MEND is honored to be one of a handful of organizations supported by the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation.

Support received from the cavaliers goes toward Project MEND KIDS, to help clients like Jaylynn:

A beautiful 3-year-old young lady who was born with Spina Bifida. Jaylynn was in great need of leg braces to assist her when walking with her walker. Although she uses a wheelchair most of the day, the braces help strengthen her legs and upper body. Because of community support we were able to help her become more independent and able to move around like other 3 year olds.

This year, the foundation was able to distribute more than $300,000 through King Antonio to the many deserving organizations, including Project MEND! Thank You!

Taxi Subsidy Service

Introducing VIAtrans' new Taxi Subsidy Service. VIAtrans customers can call Yellow Cab of San Antonio to request a trip and VIAtrans will pay up to $9.00 off the taxi fare.

When the taxi arrives give the driver $1.95, just like on a VIAtrans trip. There is no additional cost if the meter rate fare at the end of the trip is $10.95 or less. The subsidy pays for a taxi trip of about 3 miles. This new program is ideal for short trips.

This service is not available on weekends or holidays and is subject to the availability of taxis.

Did you know that
more than 54 million Americans live with a disability. That is 19%
of the population!

Many people can live more independent lives with just a little help; a wheelchair to enable them to attend a grandchild's school program or a home hospital bed to provide comfort and assist a family keep a loved one
at home.

Project MEND can provide services to the community because of YOUR generosity.
