 Shumla Wows at SAA Meeting

In late April, the Shumla research team journeyed to Austin to participate in the Society for American Archaeology's annual meeting.  The weeks leading up to the meeting had been marked by long hours spent refining and practicing presentations.
Dr. Carolyn Boyd's stratigraphy talk was, as usual, impressive.
On Friday morning, the Shumla contingent kicked off their SAA with a paper by Executive Director Dr. Carolyn Boyd on stratigraphy in Lower Pecos rock art. Dr. Boyd's paper was part of a symposium in honor of long-time friend of Shumla Dr. Marvin Rowe, and featured papers by members of the extended Shumla family including Dr. Karen Steelman and Dr. Jo McDonald.
Jeremy Freeman's presentation addressed rock art recording methods.
Friday afternoon continued Shumla's most prolific day at the SAA meeting with the Lower Pecos Symposium, co-chaired by Dr. Boyd and Texas State Professor and frequent Shumla collaborator Dr. Steve Black. The symposium featured a presentation on Lower Pecos rock art by Shumla archaeologists Jeremy Freeman and Vicky Munoz, and was a veritable who's who of members of the Shumla Family: Board member Elton Prewitt and former employees including Amanda Castaneda and Charles Koenig.
Vicky Munoz illuminated the complexities of Shumla's database.
And on Saturday morning, the Shumla team was back at work, this time in a symposium on technique and interpretation in the archaeology of rock art.  Dr. Boyd served as the discussant for the symposium while Jeremy Freeman and Vicky Munoz presented a paper that delved into technology used by Shumla to record rock art in Eagle Nest Canyon.

Shumla Scholars
Map Local Cemetery

The first Shumla Scholars class has been hard at work on their research design project and has started collecting data at the Comstock Cemetery. Students have been meticulously documenting dozens of graves, many of which are interments of unknown individuals, throughout the Cemetery.
Students carefully photograph markers at each grave site.
"The students' goal in this project is to prepare documentation to support the designation of the Comstock Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery through the Texas Historical Commission," stated Program Coordinator Andrew Freeman. "Through this work students gain insights into the complexities of designing and implementing a project: data organization, managing multiple tasks with a team, developing effective communication strategies and working towards a concrete series of goals and objectives."
Students pair high-quality site photographs with detailed data sheets.
The Scholars are slated to finish their nomination project by the end of May.

Shumla Wish List

In March and April, our generous donor community exceeded all expectations and made a number of purchases of extraordinary generosity.  To all of  our great donors out there, our staff and Board send our most sincere thanks.
What a haul! Shumla's rock art recording tech gets better and better each week.  Our donors are awesome!
Here is an all-new and improved version of Shumla's wish list. A certain super-deserving non-profit in Comstock has its eye on some windows-based tablets.  We're just saying...
