March, 2014

To kick-off Child Abuse Prevention Month, 5,846 Cardboard Kids will be placed all over San Antonio on April 3—in office lobbies, doctors’ waiting rooms, coffee shops, grocery carts, playgrounds, libraries, and more, and the creators of each Cardboard Kid will share photos of them using social media as part of ChildSafe’s awareness campaign to heighten attention, intervention and prevention of abuse and neglect of children in our community.

Currently more than 80 groups around San Antonio, including corporations like Valero and Zachry Holdings, churches, school and scout groups, law enforcement agencies, the Children’s Hospital, Methodist Healthcare Ministries and countless individuals are creating their Cardboard Kids for their upcoming debut on April 3.

Even the San Antonio Spurs are helping out, with 500 cutouts to be placed in random seats in the AT&T Center on April 2 when they play Golden State. Fans will be asked to take the Cardboard Kid home with them when they leave the arena after the game, and place it somewhere the next morning where someone else can find it.

Citizens are being asked to join in this effort by taking a photo of a Cardboard Kid on April 3and share it via social media using: #cardboardkidsSA for everything related to Cardboard Kids on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to begin a dialogue about this pressing issue.

Here are the latest statistics from recent reports of 2013 cases:

·      Bexar County had 5,846 confirmed child victims of abuse or neglect, the second highest in Texas after Harris County

·      There were 10 child fatalities resulting from child abuse and neglect in Bexar County

·      1 out of 10 abused children make an outcry, which means there are many more children being abused than reported

“Unfortunately, child abuse occurs across every demographic; it knows no borders, it happens everywhere,” said Kim Abernethy, ChildSafe CEO.  “So ChildSafe created Cardboard Kids to illustrate the pervasiveness of the issue and the fact that each child victim of abuse has a name, face and story,” she said.

The Cardboard Kids campaign was made possible by The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

Imagine the impact of over 5,800 Cardboard Kids sharing the important message about child abuse in our community on one day! Links are listed below, so if you haven’t already, join ChildSafe’s Cardboard Kids today!
